Reggae Night

Get up, Stand up, Don’t Give up the Fight – Bob Marley
And our Nuts fight for it!

Welcome to Reggae Night sports fans. Marley tunes, incense and rum soaked mangos…what more could you ask for? Well, how about an umpire? That’s right! While we enjoyed the festive atmosphere (Thank you Nana and General Counsel Nuts fans!) we waited for Blue to show…and waited…and waited. Rumor has it he was out in the van Jeff Spicoli style…but we’ll never really know. Finally, first pitch was thrown at 7:40 for the game that was scheduled to start at 6:30!

Nuts 3 took on EJ “Club Fed” Malloy’s and made every attempt to set the tone early. Coming off back-to back wins this team was more than ready…and the infield led the defense with J-Dawg to Brian for out number 1, Brian to Darryl for out number 2, and J-Dawg to Norma for out number 3. But somewhere in there EJ’s managed 5 runs. No worries for the Nuts though…we’ve got the Reggae vibe and as Bob himself would say don’t worry about a thing cause ev-ry little thing gonna be alright so we didn’t…and the mangos helped with that by the way!

Now…our turn. Nuts were off to a great start with Mike “Honeymooner” McCleaner leading off. He hits a single, Meaghan hits a single, Darryl hits a single, Julie hits a single…no folks I’m not a broken record…then J-Dawg hits a double, Dawn hits a single and after the all dust settles (and I mean that literally) we have 2 runs. Let’s pause here for a second…I have to give special recognition to my former Roverland partner and best “pirouetter” in baseball, Dawn “Spike” Locher…she means business this year and that single was en fuego! But come on Dawn….give us a pirouette or two once in awhile…we miss it!

Back to the game…Nuts take the field … McCleaner throws to Norma and that’s 1, Brian to Norma for out number 2, and Rick makes the catch for out number 3…so how did they get 4 runs? Oh who cares…the fans in the stands are getting Irie…and here come the cheers…

Bottom of the 2nd, Gibby hits a double, Vicki takes her base and Rick brings Alex home with a single, Norma takes her base…looking good we’ve got one run…hold em’ Nuts hold em’! We again take the field…J-Dawg throws to Norma for number 1, Gibby makes like the most amazing catch ever for 2, and then he does it again for 3…EJ’s only score 1.

Offense time…Nuts fans rev it up a little with more Marley tunes, cheerleading and Mango magic…McCleaner leads off with a double, Darryl hits a home run, Jason gets a single, Dawn takes her base (hey, where is the pirouette?), and Amy the Ocho takes her base. We score 2 more…Stir it up…little darling…stir it up!

Top o’ the 4th…EJ’s is only up by 5 and we know we can take them (and if not we better get an invite back to the bar!) again the infield leads the defense…J-Dawg swats the first fly, then McCleaner, then Brian throws to Norma for out number 3…we hold them to only 1 run…it’s our turn let’s make it count…we need hits we need runs!

(So this is where I skip to the 5th inning…trust me on that one)!

But we are only behind by 6…if we can hold them we’re still in the game! And away we go…J-Dawg throws to Norma for out number 1, Gibby makes yet another fabulous catch, and Brian throws to Meaghan for 3…and somewhere in the duststorm EJ’s takes a bit more of a lead…but time out! EJ’s just debuted a cool new time-saving, base-running strategery…it’s called “2.5 base” if you haven’t seen it it’s that base they keep tagging half way between 2nd & 3rd and apparently the umpire knows about it too…someone consult the almanac cause we need this in our playbook!

We end the game with an 8-18 score and get an invite to the bar…Nuts played some great defense and are hitting well…we were just ready to play at 6:30…Blue’s time table messed with our mojo! We’ll get them next time!

Game 2…Nuts 2 take on the Longshots…and don’t let the name fool you! We set the tone as Paul makes a spectacular catch for out number 1, then Duke throws to Kara for number 2, and Duke makes a great catch for 3…our turn…move over…we’re ready…and we have only been waiting two hours to play this game! Which to some degree probably worked in our favor…even though the Jell-O shots were downed, the Mangos were inhaled and everyone in the stands now knew every word to every song on Bob Marley’s Legend album…

Here we go…Steve “Monstuhr” Stuhr leads off and takes his base, then Kara singles, Jose doubles, Duke singles and we have 3 runs! Like I said…we set the tone! We head into the 3rd and hold them to 3 runs with some great catches that deserve applause…Jorge makes the first for out 1, then Alex makes the 2nd and Sue the 3rd…and Sue…that looks like it hurt…was there smoke coming from her glove?

Bottom of the 2nd…we’re up for more…and we bring it! Dianna leads off with a single, Alex takes his base, Rebecca singles, Eustacio doubles, Jorge singles, Steve doubles, Kara singles and Sue singles…what an inning…I have to jump up and down…so I do…and then I count up 8 runs! Bring it? Oh, it’s been broughten!

During the 3rd and 4th innings the Longshots try to creep back up on us…but not without some spectacular plays by our defense. In the 3rd, Duke tags 2nd and throws to Kara at 1st for double play number 1, and Steve the “Monstuhr” (try saying that 3 times really fast) makes a great catch for 3. In the 4th, comes the best play of the game…the Alex to Duke to Kara double play…I wish we could see that one again! And finely, two AP (Alex) to KP (Kara) connections for the out at 1st. We enter the 5th up by 4…bring on the cheerleaders!

Hold em Nuts…Hold em! This is nail-biting suspense at its best…our Nuts are fighting for it! Kara makes the catch for out number 1, Eustacio makes another catch for 2, and the AP to KP connection comes alive for 3…we are so excited we forget that the Longshots have gained ground. No worries though…the Monstuhr is leading off!

Steve takes his base, Jose doubles again, and Duke triples…woo-hoo! We end the inning in a tie, 14-up. Next scene…the 6th.

Oh it’s getting hot in here! And we need more cheers (thanks Lori and fans)! We have to hold them. Duke makes the first catch for out 1, then he does it again for 2, then it’s the AP to KP connection again for 3 (do they rehearse this stuff?)…We do our best but Longshots take 5…we had one more shot at it…or Jell-O shot at it…and then it was over.
What a game…our Nuts fought hard…even I was exhausted just watching them…or maybe it was the 3.5 hours we spent in the stands…um…or the mangos!
Anyway…great job guys! We proud of our Nuts!

Best quotes of the game:

“Come on honeymooner, get it up” – Lori Redfearn after newlywed “McCleaner” threw his first ball of the evening.

“And she didn’t even drop the call” – Lori Redfearn in response to a foul ball to the stands that ended up in the hands of a fan on the phone.

“It’s the AP to KP connection” – Alex Gibson’s description of Alex Porter’s many throws to Kara at first. So catchy I had to borrow it!

And a few stats for the fun of it:

Number of times that either Mike, Brian or J-Dawg threw to Norma making the out at first: 8

Number of times Nuts fans had the opportunity to yell, “nice catch Gibby”: 3

Number of times those same fans had the opportunity to yell “nice catch Duke”: 3

The evening’s double plays: 2

Number of times EJ’s didn’t touch 3rd when rounding for home: 2

The number of AP to KP connections: 4

The number of Bob Marley songs quoted in this entry: 3

And finally, a few words from Gibby:

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Angel game this past
Saturday night was one of the most fun times I've had at a ballpark.
Seeing Super-Vlad hit the grand slam that put the game out of reach
for the Devil Rays was awesome. He achieved RBIs 1000-1004 and
Garrett Anderson was honored for his 2000th hit before the game. A
good showing for the Halos! I also got to sit next to Toby Hall's
Grandma for an inning while I was visiting a friend. Thanks
Lori...Bob the usher says 'Hi'.

And finally, finally the last word:

Congratulations to Robert “Robert” Eaton who won the last week’s Hawaii trivia (refer to the comments section for answers) he is now the proud owner of a Reggae starter kit! We’ll see you this week at Pirate Night…arrrr!
