Straight-Up Softball

Welcome to straight-up softball night…where only the die-hardest of fans showed up to cheer on our Nuts and our other Nuts against the Longshots and Club Fed…who I was surprised to see since we sent them up on a plane filled with snakes after “the call” that made history two weeks ago…but anyway…lets get right to it…well after a little softball quiz:

A guy named George Hancock gets credit for what we now call softball. Where was softball first played?
1) In the gym of a boat club
2) At the YMCA
3) On a baseball field
4) On a school yard field

Okay…to the game…the Kara team leads off against the Longshots with the Monstuhr who immediately slams a double….he makes it look so easy doesn’t he? Then KP hits a single and Duke “with the look” Low lands a double and we are up by three with help from Sue who gets on base with a single! Set the tone nuts…set the tone! We look hot and are well prepared to hold the Longshots as we take the field…

Off we go with Paul making a great catch for 1…and nice throw back to the Reflex by the way…way to hold em Nuts! Now it gets really good…Duke makes a nice little catch for 2 and than gets the base-runner for 3 in a Nuts double-play…we hold the Longshots to 2 and head into the 2nd up by 1…

Oh…the 2nd is full of highlights but most impressive is Rebecca’s TLH (totally legit hit)! It would have been a single…or even a double if that Longshot’s glove hadn’t gotten in the way…you were robbed Rebecca…you were robbed! We take the field again and hold the L-Shots to only 3 with a Sean to KP out at 1st…another great play by KP at 1st for 2…and a fly ball right to the Monstuhr for 3…we like totally know he is going to catch it so we start our top o’ the 3rd pep rally…come on Nuts…work it!

Alex leads off with a single…Sue slams a single and Sean is on with a single….we think we are done with the “single” trend when the Monstuhr steps up…but no…he wants one too…single is as single does I reckon…but we score 1…and its only 4-5 when the Longshots take their turn…here we go…

We can call this part the “Duke” inning…but before I get there I have to give a shout out to “good scoop” Sin-D…for playing 2nd in that sand dune of an infield ya’ll play in…you looked hot out there…holla! Now back to Duke…who made a great line-drive catch for out number 1…then Duke makes this great play at 2nd…before he attempts to throw to 1st for the double play…When all of a sudden this guy in a Lakers uniform comes running at him from first…I thought I’d entered the confusional and forgot what sport I was watching…when Blue makes the foul call! I mean Obstruction call…to the free-throw line Duke!

Top o’ the 4th…time for some more softball tivia:

Softball was first played in what year?
1) 1898
2) 1887
3) 1909
4) 1921

Duke leads off with a single…wait…what? A single? Can somebody check to see if pigs are flying and hell is frozen over…a single from Duke…unheard of! Then Paul hits a single…and joins the “special” single club…and Jose “every time” Baldanado wants in so he singles too…yawn! Come on peeps…how about the “Triple” club or something…these are the Longshots after all!

We take the field…and this is when we realize the problem! We’re playing in Quicksand! Poor Dianna gets sucked in at home plate like that guy in Nightmare on Elm Street who gets sucked into the bed! She can’t even move as she sacrifices herself to make the play! Somebody throw her a rope or something! Other great plays come to pass like the AP to KP connection at 1st for 1…the nice line drive catch by Porter for 2…and Duke to KP for 3…but as we regroup and dust off…we realize we are down by…ummm…13…no worries…we have another shot at it…bring out the rally monkey and use the Inglewood Jack…punch it!

Sean manages to take his base without getting stuck in the home plate Quicksand…then Monstuhr starts a “double” club…and we bring one in! The girls make a great effort too by using the “bat with a twang” to advance the runner…but we over before the “double” club even gets off the ground…next time Nuts…next time!

A little trivia before we start the next game:

Softball was first called by what name?
1) Handball
2) Soft baseball
3) Stick ball
4) Indoor baseball

Number 2…the Darryl team leads off with a double from Rick…then Alex triples and we are on the board! We need to beat these Martini guzzlers so off we go as the “Inning of Norma” is born! The Cleaner throws to Norma for out number 1…then replay…Cleaner to Norma for 2…and we end with a nice J-Dawg to Norma out for 3…smoking hot! We start the 2nd with a 1 – 1 score.

To the 2nd…Brian BeLeeves the “singles” club is a good idea so he slams one to get on base…while he is out there recruiting others to join…the inning gets by us and we find ourselves out in the field again…More stunning performances kick it off with J-Dawg to Jeanine for out number 1…replay…J-Dawg to Jeanine for 2…and Gibby…feeling left out….throws to J-Dawg for 3…we hold them to 2 runs and are feeling good! We can totally win this thing and send these clowns back up with the snakes…

Off we go…or so we thought…that darn Quicksand really becomes a problem when mixed with the swampy outfield…what a mess…everyone is slipping and sliding…and falling in dirt…”Our Nuts sure know how to play on their knees” exclaims one Nuts' fan…But with all of the chaos…Norma still makes a great stop for the out at 1st…then Brian makes the pick-off at 2nd for 2…and J-Dawg throws to Norma for 3…we are only down by 4…come on Nuts…whoop that trick!

4th inning batting action includes Meaghan’s “single” club initiation…nice hit Meaghan! But just as we gear up for more…the swampy, Quicksand filled, hole-ridden field is taken over with snakes and…and we scream for mercy…Club Fed fires 11 softballs out in the field but that doesn’t stop the mayhem…finally Blue sends in the Mercy brigade to put a stop to things…phew…we safely leave the field…Club Fed slithers away and all is well. Don’t worry Nuts…we’ll get them next time…and to gear up for it…all of you need to view the Ingelwood Jack which will be our new strategery:

A final bit of softball trivia:

The seams of a softball are sewn by what process?
1) Automated machinery
2) By hand
3) Combination of machinery and hand
4) By the Rover

We all know that companies sponsor teams for exposure and tax benefits. But in the early years, companies would sponsor softball teams for a different reason. What was it?
1) Games could be played over the lunch hour
2) It kept men out of bars
3) It created a way for management to interact with other employees

And a few quotes from the fans…they funny!

“Like Criselle, you can always just kick it” – Lori Redfearn to Sin-D after she made a fabulous attempt to throw to KP at 1st.

“Don’t use that bat…it’s broke” – Ty to Rebecca who was about to hit with the “bat with a twang”.

“Maybe for the boys” – Rebecca’s response to Ty…she funny!

“Nice Nuts!” – an embarrassed Nuts fan referring to the Nuts inning performance.

“Amy do you have the ice chest” – Everyone

The two VERY important stats of the evening:

Number of “Singles”: 13

Number of times someone referred to the missing Jell-O shots: 50

Trivia answers:

a) In the gym of a boat club
b) 1887
d) Indoor baseball
b) By hand
a) Games could be played over the lunch hour
